What makes fostering so important, why aren't shelters enough?
Fostering quite literally saves lives. Every year in the U.S., an estimated 378,000 dogs are euthanized in shelters—that's over 1,000 dogs every single day. Many of these animals are healthy, adoptable pets who simply run out of time or space. By opening your home, even temporarily, you give a dog a second chance—freeing up shelter space, reducing stress on the animal, and increasing their chances of adoption. Fostering is one of the most direct and impactful ways to help end unnecessary euthanasia.
How long will I be fostering for?
It varies! Some dogs are adopted quickly (a few days to a few weeks), while others may need a little longer. You can specify your availability—whether you’re open to short-term, weekend, or longer-term fosters. We work with your schedule to find the best fit.
Do I have to pay for food, vet bills, or supplies?
Nope! The foster organization covers all medical expenses and often provides food, a crate, leash, and other supplies. Your main role is to give love, care, and a safe place for the dog to thrive.
What if I already have pets or kids?
That’s totally okay! We’ll do our best to match you with a dog that fits your household. Many foster dogs do well with other animals and kids—we’ll be upfront about the dog’s temperament and any needs. Safety and harmony come first.
Can I still foster if I work full time, or live in an apartment?
Yes! Many foster dogs do just fine in apartments or with working families. We’ll match you with a dog that fits your lifestyle—whether low-energy, crate-trained, or okay being home alone for a few hours.
What happens if I get too attached?
That’s a common (and beautiful) concern! It just means your heart is in the right place. Many fosters do choose to adopt (we call it a “foster win”), but remember—you’re saving lives by helping dogs find their forever homes. Letting one go opens your home to save another.
What happens if it's not working out?
No judgment, no guilt—we’ve got your back. If the situation isn’t a good fit, the foster org will find another placement for the dog. We want this to be a positive experience for everyone, including you.
